Trachemys yaquia
(Legler & Webb, 1970)
Cajeme, Sonora, Mexico. August 20, 2017.
We knew these turtles could be found in irrigation canals near Ciudad Obregon, and our caravan to southern Sonora made a slight detour to find them. The smaller-sized Trachemys yaqui looked a lot like red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans), but the large adults were another matter – their heads and limbs were much paler and brownish, with the red ear spots much diminished. The big adults were also much larger in size than any mature red-ear.
