Western Twist-neck Turtle

Platemys platycephala melanonota
ERNST 1984
Maynas, Depto Loreto, Peru. January 11, 2011.

This turtle was found near a small stream near the Madre Selva field station. Platemys are mostly aquatic, but they will move about on land when the water is high, or when they must lay their eggs. Taxonomically they belong with the South American sidenecks in the family Chelidae. A second specimen turned up one morning in 2018, crossing a small stream after a night of heavy rain.
