Three-lined Salamander

Eurycea guttolineata
(Holbrook, 1838)
Dekalb Co., Alabama. October 2, 2011

This salamander was observed as part of a herp survey in NE Alabama. It looked like a eastern long-tailed salamander (Eurycea longicauda longicauda) to me, but those don’t occur that far south; all I could figure is that it was a guttolineata with the median dorsal stripe broken up into spots. We found several others like it over the course of the day, but I haven’t found any similar specimens when I’ve done an internet search for them.

My Flickr album for this species is here.
