Southwestern Woodhouse’s Toad

Anaxyrus woodhousii australis
(Shannon & Lowe, 1955)
Cochise Co., Arizona. August 3, 2000.

Another ‘road toad’ encountered in the flat grasslands just west of the Chiricahuas, as pocket thunderstorms boiled up around us in the dark. The elongated parotid glands behind the eye, coupled with the pale dorsal stripe, are good identifying field marks for woodhousii.
