Southwestern Speckled Rattlesnake

Crotalus pyrrhus
(Cope, 1866)
San Diego Co., California. March 29, 2012.

Shortly after arriving in southern California I visited a county park to kill some time waiting for friends, and to shoot some lizards. Walking down a trail I spotted something interesting off to one side – a little speck heading for shelter under a large boulder. I learned that day how ‘blendy’ speckled rattlesnakes are – their colors match the surrounding rocks and soil, and details of scales and even outline tend to blend in with the background.
