Southern Two-lined Salamander

Eurycea cirrigera
(Green, 1831)
Vermilion Co., Illinois. March 3, 1996.

I rarely find a two-lined salamander away from a water source. They can be found under rocks, logs and leaves in moist areas, but most of my finds have been in the water or right next to it. Often they share the same habitat with the long-tailed salamander (Eurycea longicauda), their larger cousin. This is one of my local salamanders that I can find at least one or two any month of the year, if I put in some effort.
