South American Lancehead

Bothrops atrox
(Linnaeus, 1758)
Depto Loreto, Peru. January 11, 2011.

A handful of jergon (local name) turned up on my first Peruvian adventure. We were warned not to move around the field station at night without proper footwear an d a flashlight, since lanceheads were regular visitors after dark. Sure enough, one was spotted just after dusk one night, cutting a straight path across the cleared compound.
