Sonoran Racer

Coluber flagellum cingulum
LOWE & WOODIN 1954
Sonora, Mexico. August 26, 2011.

In the mornings and afternoons, these racers are a common sight on the roads in Sonora, but it’s difficult to stop the vehicle, jump out, and lay hands on them before they disappear into the thornscrub. One of our group (Shaun) managed to do this on several occasions. Formerly placed in the genus Masticophis.

My Flickr album for this species is here.
