Pickerel Frog

Lithobates palustris
(LeConte, 1825)
Adams Co., Illinois. August 20, 1994.

My first pickerel frog was perched in a small, steep-sided canyon cut by a spring-fed stream. Caves and springs and small streams are a favorite habitat of this frog. Often I see them in the hollows formed where a stream undercuts the root system of a tree; they sit quietly there, waiting for the next insect to bumble along.
