Pseudotriton diastictus
BISHOP 1941
Jefferson Co., Kentucky. May 6, 2006
I found this little beauty in a ditch next to a two-lane road, hiding under a small section of log just a few inches away from the asphalt shoulder. I happened to pass though the area again a few days later, and stopped on a whim for another look. The muddie was still under its log (see second photo).
Formerly classified as the subspecies Pseudotriton montanus diastictus, but was recognized as a distinct species by Collins, 1991, Herpetol. Rev., 22: 43. That may change again.
