Midget Faded Rattlesnake

Crotalus oreganus concolor
Woodbury 1929
San Juan Co., Utah. May 28, 2011.

‘Midget Faded’ seemed like an awkward common name for this rattlesnake, and I decided to swap the two words around. It wasn’t until I was back at home that I recalled Edward Abbey also referred to the Faded Midget rattlesnake in his classic Desert Solitaire.

This specimen was found crossing the road in the Canyon Rim Lands of Utah. I think I may stick with calling them Faded Midgets, even though ‘faded’ is not an appropriate adjective for this specimen.
