Grismer’s Collared Lizard

Crotaphytus grismeri
McGuire, 1994
Mexicali, Baja California Norte, Mexico. April 21, 2018.

We arrived at the canyon where these lizards scratched out a living and it looked like the surface of Mars. You had to look carefully, and in the lower places where rare moisture might collect, to see any vegetation. It was an incredibly stark and severe landscape, but in retrospect, I’ve seen other species of Crotaphytus in similar circumstances. There’s just enough moisture to support plant and insect life, and these rock riders eke out a living on beetles and utas, hiding in rock piles when the sun is at full force.

My Flickr album for this species is here.

HerpMapper records for this species are here.
