Flathead Snake

Tantilla gracilis
Baird & Girard, 1853
Franklin Co., Missouri. April 20, 1976.

Back in the day, I used to visit a small cedar glade alongside a highway. The glade had several open exposures between cedar brakes that featured hundreds of hand-sized limestone rocks. I had to look under a lot of those small rocks to find one or two gracilis. In subsequent years, fire suppression destroyed the glade – when I drive by now, the hillside wears a thick blanket of cedars, and I wonder if any flathead snakes remain.
