Eastern Mud Turtle

Kinosternon subrubrum subrubrum
(Bonnaterre, 1789)
Okefenokee Swamp, Charlton Co., Georgia. March 1978.

A group of us students were using a dip net to catch sirens in a roadside ditch near the Okefenokee one night, and managed to catch several eastern mud turtles in the process. Most my photos from that long-ago trip are lost; pictured are 2008 specimens from North Carolina. I’m happy when these sturdy creatures turn up, and occasionally they do so in a roadside ditch, just like my first.
