Heterodon gloydi
(Edgren), 1952
Scott Co., Missouri. October 5, 2012.
It was quite a day in the field – our group flipped a northern scarlet snake under tin, and walked up a couple of dusty hognoses. Heterodon gloydi is often considered a subspecies of the plains hognose (Heterodon nasicus), and other workers simply consider them to be nasicus. I’ll continue to recognize it as a full species until further information proves otherwise.
