Crocodile Tegu

Crocodilurus amazonicus
(Spix, 1825)
Rio Orosa, near the Madre Selva field station, Depto Loreto, Peru. January 17, 2013.

John Sullivan and I were kayaking on the Rio Orosa one sunny afternoon. I paddled along one bank and John the other, and he called me over to have a look at a lizard tucked back in a bit of brush along the bank. It took some stealthy maneuvering for us to work our yaks in close for photos, and we managed a few before the tegu plopped into the dark water.
