Buttermilk Racer

Coluber constrictor anthicus
(Cope, 1862)
Harris Co., Texas. May 31, 2010.

After staring at the Buttermilk Racer in Roger Conant’s Field Guide for nearly forty years, I finally had the opportunity to see one for myself. Found under a section of particle board alongside a road, this snake was at least as magnificent as the one in the book. All it took was a long drive and the flipping of several hundred pieces of tin!
