Brownchin Racer

Coluber constrictor helvigularis
Auffenberg, 1955
Liberty Co. Florida. April 25, 2003.

Finding a brownchin on cold and rainy day was a pleasant surprise. The snake was huddled under a short section of log, the only snake found on my first visit to the Apalachicola National Forest. Some folks think helvigularis isn’t really a legitimate subspecies, but I’ll go along with it – it looks different, at the very least.

More on this snake in The Why of a Brown Chin blog post.

HerpMapper records for this species are here.
