Boreal Chorus Frog

Pseudacris maculata
(Agassiz, 1850)
St. Louis Co., Missouri. April 1973.

The call of Pseudacris sounds much like a thumb dragging across the teeth of a plastic comb, a metallic staccato never forgotten once heard. My first chorus frogs were in a small pond I could almost step over, and they would jump in at my approach. If I stood still and waited patiently, they would soon pop their heads above water and make their way back to the bank.
